Social Conscience
It isn't that I'm shocked, but I'll admit to a constant state of surprise
and amusement in these survey response. I am so delighted and pleased
to discover many opinions and actions about social conscience actually match
mine. It validates my claim that I am not so much weird as peculiar.
Our parents, church and scouting leaders will be happy to learn that we
follow the golden rule and do a good deed daily. We pay, play and pray
it forward. I like that about us and think we can be proud of
ourselves.
Our spectrum of social conscience is pretty wide. We feed and
clothe the hungry, we volunteer our time with The American Red Cross, we
open our homes to disaster victims and we help others get a good start in
life. We donate time and money and products to Habitat For Humanity.
We work as mentors, educators, prison GED workers, coaches and Big Brothers
and Big Sisters. We buy something from every school child coming to
our door with a fund raiser. We like candy bars best and we like
'ordering from catalogue' least. We always buy a year's supply of Girl Scout
Cookies and eat them all in a month.
Just as we were helped by others in our struggles, we pay it
forward.
Some of us prefer to work in the background and quietly do good things
for others. Those grass roots behind the scenes workers are largely
those who just want to get it done without engaging in committees,
organizations and task forces. Recon that is part of why we are the ME
generation. As in, "I'll do this but don't expect me to come to
meetings."
Thankfully we do have our own who take greater leadership roles and use
their talents and experience to keep the wave flowing. Without you,
who would make the soup kitchen schedules and remind us to show up on time.
Without you, we wouldn't walk up and down our streets picking up litter.
Well, maybe we would do that. I think you get the picture. Some
Baby Boomers stand apart and do the things needing doing so the rest of us
can concentrate on ME.
Environment: Not one single respondent
said they cared nothing about the earth, environment or ecology. Geeze,
some of us are really wild about it. For each of us that oppose
government intervention in ecology and environment, there are two of us who
demand more! The general consensus is that we are destroying this
planet. A couple three nukes blowing up will be a bad thing.
Others argue that carbon emissions and methane gas are the destruction of
the world. I'm kinda getting the idea that if we could keep cows from
farting that things would get a lot better fast.
There are whackos in our generation! Conspiracy theorists
prostelize about false environment research and reports. Others think
that environmental companies represent a huge economic force and things will
always be in dire conditions in order to support the 'green' industry.
Here's what I do for the economy. I cut my grass with a NON
motorized mower. Three acres of it! I'm always leaning around to
see if any of my neighbors are watching. You know who they are.
They are the ones who drive hybrids and roll their eyes and look down their
noses at our SUVs. They are the ones who plug in their cars at
night and then fire up the huge riding mower.
As a summary about environmental regulation and law and order.
There is a school of thought that says humans would dump poop in our water
supplies if the government didn't make them stop. Kind of frightening
idea don't you think?
