Disposable Income Continued....
Beauty: Baby Boomer women really like manicures, pedicures,
massages, facials and pampering. Highly ranked were those spa services
featuring champagne and flavored coffees. Nuff said about this category.
More of a duh-type question anyway. Both men and women spend freely for hair
cuts and styles. Interestingly, more men use hair color and grow
products than I would have thought before this survey. And guess what?
They also dye their moustache and chest hair to match. Yep they do!
Worries: Remember the phrase, "Don't worry, be happy"?
It was one of those that sort of defined our youth. Many Baby Boomers still
live this way. Others not so much. Some Baby Boomers feel the
pinch for health care, co-pays and prescriptions. Oh, and in the last
year, gasoline. I know a great chunk of MY disposable income; now goes
to gasoline. Some of us consider things like long term care insurance
and other things that might go under a normal operating budget to be paid
for from what is, or used to be, disposable income.
Miscellaneous: Disposable income floods out of our accounts
in ways almost too numerous to mention. But I'll try. We like
shopping at gourmet grocery stores and like to experiment in the kitchen.
We spend money on boats and sports cars (not required for day to day
functioning). Our hobbies get a lot of attention as we explore arts and
crafts, woodworking, and other time filling leisure activities. We buy
tools, antiques, paintings, sculpture, pottery and really give attention to
personalize gifts.
Going to spend a minute on the focus on personalized gifts. I've
known this for a long time as I have a sister web site specializing in
personalized gifts. Even I was too stupid to realize my customer base
is pretty much age 40 and up. Baby Boomers have reached an age and
attitude where gift giving is more than throwing money at it... though lots
of us happily do so... it is growing into something worthwhile and
meaningful and memorable. Personalized gifts are seen as a perfect way
to make a lasting impression and also have the BEST gift of the party.

And so ends for now this epistle to Baby Boomer disposable income.
More to come... don't know when but keep checking back.
