The ME Generation
That is what they all called us. So be it, why not be all about me?
Many of us are pretty happy with that. If children learn what they
live then we learned that we were precious, wanted, indulged, spoiled,
pampered and over protected. Think about the reasons our parents
looked at us the way they did. If your parents are in their 70s or 80s
then they suffered through, born within, and swore their children would have
better lives.
Our parents and grandparents were lucky to survive to adulthood. They
suffered, endured and died from incurable disease, infant & maternal
mortality, physical debilitation, hunger and despair. Their lives included
the Great Depression, World War Two, The Korean Conflict and more. Is
it any wonder that our parents sacrificed and scrimped and saved and
borrowed to make sure we had better lives than they did? We did the
same thing with our kids and it plays forward.
Some of us were raised to the tomes of Dr. Spock. Others by parents
on barbiturates, cigarettes and alcohol. Our parents made sure we
played little league sports and played in the band. We went to Boy
Scouts and Girl Scouts and we learned to always be prepared and to do a good
deed daily. Church was the foundation of our morality and much of our
social lives. Friends were not so much important as family.
So they call us the ME generation. Children learn what they live.
We are the generation of first television. We screamed for toys
advertised on commercials. Our parents were stunned by our greedy
selfishness. We begged to be taken to Disney. We whined when we didn't
get what we wanted (though most of our parents weren't afraid to slap a
backhand when needed).
So yeah we are the ME generation. We want it all and we want it
now? Is that so wrong?
