The survey asked a series of questions aimed at 'finding ourselves'.
Remember those carefree days when our generation took time to find
ourselves? Many of us found ourselves lining up for a hookah,
practicing free sex, seeing how many days we could travel without a bath.
What is a Baby Boomer and Who are we?
A consolidation of several
great submissions.....
Baby Boomers are the largest surviving demographic in
the history of humanity.
Think about what that means. Yeah I know there is a new boom going
on, but this isn't a treatise about illegal aliens birthing new citizens
daily. This is about us so I'll use the phrase and copyright it if I
have to.
This is about us. We are large in numbers and in size (pun
intended). We have better health care than our parents and
grandparents prayed for. There is a pill for everything from high
blood pressure to memory enhancement to erectile dysfunction. We have more opportunities for income
and employment than our depression era parents could dream about. We explore
technology and use to enhance our income and leisure. We had better education than our pro-genitors and most
likely better than our children and grandchildren. We have wrinkle
cream, liposuction, custom sized boobs and surgically enhanced wieners. We
have organ transplants, new knees and hips.
We are who we are and darned happy about it.
Quantifiably defining Baby Boomers is a tough job. There are even
arguments about the proper age of a Baby Boomer. Search engine
results solidify birth ages from 1945 to 1964. Survey results were a
little different and certainly more interesting. Those born
between 1954 and 1964 tend to exclude themselves from the Baby Boomer Mix.
I dunno why about that. Probably most likely to distance themselves
from those of us who probably were their older brothers and sisters and they
want nothing to do with us. As in, "I am NOT a Baby BOOMER, my older
sister is one of those and I can't stand her."
And wow! Our range of other statistics are incredible. We are
50 yr olds with 10 yr old children. We are 62 yr old great grandparents with
custodial rights and privileges. We have children in college and
others out making their ways in the world. We are happy and sad for our
offspring and provide unconditional love and support.
If not already there, we are rapidly chasing down retirement and
wondering, what's in it for me?
I have intentionally oversimplified the what and who question of Baby
Boomers. What and who we are become defined by our unique
perspective on individual experiences, adventures and expectations.
The topics to follow attempt to better personify and define that which
makes Baby Boomers what and who we are.
