Honestly, I really have some great contributions about decorating. Until
I figure out what y'all are talking about, we'll go with more about my inept
attempts at decorating. I do have the dimes thing worked out.
The more dimes you have, the better stuff you get.
Once upon a time our family downsized to a simpler lifestyle. The
honey would say this differently. I quit my power position and took up
child rearing and housekeeping. The big house was gone and the 'cozy
comfortable cottage' became our home. We never really liked that house
and when we finally moved to our new home, it showed the 'naturally aged
patina' of our neglect.
Many have asked but all have failed to find the answer to our deplorable
living conditions. Moving day resembled the emptying of a clown car.
And that was just essentials. It took us nearly a year to get that tiny
house emptied, painted, re-carpeted... and oh yeah... the requisite junk
cars removed from out back.
But I digress. The topic of this epistle is 'decorating'.
When we moved to the 'new to us' house last year, interested friends and
family asked me what my 'decorating style' would be. I'm not sure if
these questions were regarding house warming gifts or a hint that perhaps I
might find a 'style' and keep to it. Probably the latter.
I think our 'style' would include low maintenance, sturdy and reliable.
Furnishings include heirlooms left behinds, and hand-me-downs.
Although I did insist upon new furniture for my dining room, bedroom and
living room which also doubles as my office. Actually, this
isn't really true either. My new dining furniture was actually left
behind by the previous owner. It looked brand new and was nicer than
anything I had ever owned. Our mistake was in telling visitors that it
was a 'left behind'.
Our master bedroom has a brand new bed. I threw a fit and made sure
that happened. The rest of that room is a hodge-podge still but one of these
days the right furniture will make itself known to me.
The old bedroom suite is a 'left behind' at our old house. Ditto
the dining set. We're hoping new buyers will be impressed with the
naturally aged patina.
I'm in my living room come office/library right now. And I see a
delightful montage of all our themes plus some new stuff. A small
bookshelf and old record cabinet came from granny. Two red lounge chairs and
a mission style cabinet from the hand me downs. Another red rocking
chair was a left behind. We keep the rocking chair because
granddaughter the younger needs to have her 'rock a baby' in this chair.
There is a Wurlitzer piano circa 1976 (bought new by me then). The
warm oak book cases and my roll top desk are new. If you don't count
the floor there are six different shades of wood in this room. I don't
count the floor because it is oak that is stained to capture all of the
different hues.
I love this room! No televisions allowed!!!
The decorating dimes show through in my library shelves and roll top
desk. They are from Wheylan furniture and as far as I can see, they
are the best bang for dimes ever. They are sturdy, hardwood (no
veneers) and luxuriously with just a slight faux distressing.
I've been hauled all over the country to look at furniture. Several
people in my life were anxious to introduce me to places like Pottery Barn,
Ikea, too many others I can't even remember. I don't exactly groan
when invited to go furniture shopping. But I do have to put on my big
girl underpants and tough it out. I do pay attention because I am
trying to be educated. A little nagging keeps going on in my brain
saying 'fat chance'.
Shortly after we moved here my sister invited me out for lunch and
antique-ing. I think if you can put on your best attitude and
set a goal in mind, you can get through anything. Lunch was good
as it always is. My goal for the antique-ing was to look for just the
right set of light sheer curtains for my front living room windows.
This room enjoys cool breezes and I wanted a light 'billlowy' effect.
Our first stop hit the mother lode. Beginner's luck I'd think.
I found my sheer curtains ivory silk with cutwork and early vintage machine
embroidery. They were beautifully pressed and hanging on dress
hangers. I snatched them up and took them to the front checkout.
I didn't really even care how much they cost. I was going to have
them. I did have a bit of a 'nickel and dime' conversation with the
proprietor. "Are you SURE that this is the correct price?
Perhaps you should call the owner and verify". She did and I took them
home for $9.95 plus tax.
Now THAT was decorating with DIMES!!
One of these days here real soon I'll move on to the family room.
I'm not even sure HOW I will describe our decorating sense in that room.
