Down Sized Continued ....
This topic is more like 'frog marched out the door'.
It isn't exactly NEW news about what is happening to baby boomer
teachers. I think the majority of input received on this topic has
been from teachers. It merits some attention at least in this web
site.
This could go on and on so I'll try and consolidate.
All examples have the following events in common:
All the teachers were slow to realize what was happening to them.
All were 30 year PLUS veterans. All were in the upper range of teacher
pay scales.
All of them suffered what I'd like to call 'intellectual torture'.
Some were re-assigned the most difficult classes in remote schools in their
system. Some were put through impossible to meet performance
observations and evaluations. In at least one instance, these 'observations'
were conducted by people who had never actually taught a class! Their
lesson plans were criticized and re-written.
Several were required to become proficient in Spanish in order to teach
children if illegal aliens. One amusing anecdotal story told of the school
being sure to provide Spanish notes for children to take home so they would
be sure to sign up for the free lunch programs. However, when asked to
compose notes to parents about sending children to school with clean faces,
hands and hair.... the teacher claims this request was tossed in the trash.
Oh.. and get this! One teacher claimed she had to send her entire
kindergarten class to wash their faces and hands in the morning because she
was not allowed to 'profile' the kids or do anything that might hurt their
fragile esteem.
One contributor says her classroom was taken away and she was assigned a
portable cart that she was to push around the school to teach her classes.
Administration claimed the situation was only temporary but no end was even
predicted.
In every case, the decision for voluntary early retirement was described
as an epiphany. One day they just decided it was over and they
tendered resignations. Several of them were effective immediately.
So what happened? All of the higher salaried teachers were replaced
with two newbie teachers at probably more than half salary!
Soooo duuuuuuhhhhh. Could this have been easier to figure out?
It is true that public school teachers have great retirement pensions.
They don't get social security but there is no limit to the amount of income
they can earn.
All of the teachers responding to our call for stories landed on their
feet. All are doing well substitute teaching back in their old
classrooms. Less pay but none of the hassle. No lesson plans, no
observations, no parental meetings. They work when they want to and
not when they don't. Others are earning good money from tutoring,
private lessons (music - art etc).
Your stories about downsizing and getting the 'boot' for any reason are
welcome! We'll collect them, consolidate and publish. No real
names or people are used so fear not. We'll protect your privacy and
anonymity.
