Self Employment continued....

Brass Tacks... I've always wondered that phrase.  There has got to be a story about the origins of this colloquialism.  For the uninitiated it might mean bad sharp things left on the floor of the craft room.  It might mean sharp connective objects used to keep something together.

Nevertheless.... self employment isn't a jump to concept.  In many ways it requires harder work, attention to detail, employees and arithmetic!!!

The good news is that you can outsource a lot of the accounting, payroll and even HR functions.  Depends on how fast your company grows and shows enough profit that your spouse and partner agree that things are just fine.

Self Employment mostly means there is no one to blame but yourself.  If something gets screwed up, there are no opportunities for scathing emails to the head shed, cause you are it.  The head.

Many long time corporate job holders are quick to say they have the self discipline to do what it takes to be successfully self employed.  unnn huhhh

Been there, am there now and after 17 years of it, none of this is as easy at it seems.

Discipline.  There is no one to check to see if you showed up for work.  There is no one to assure that your product or service quality is good.  There is only you in charge of sales, service, hiring, firing, scrubbing toilets or mowing the grass if you are lucky enough to have a business building.

Leadership: Do you have leadership skills or do you want to hang around waiting for someone else to make risky decisions?

Decisions and Delegation:  Can you make on the spot decisions and accept the consequences good or bad?  Do you micromanage or delegate?

Accountability: Can you stand up to the line and accept full accountability for everything and anything your company produces or sells?

Vision: Can you see the big picture or do the trees in the forest scare you?  Do you have an action plan outlining your specific intentions and your methodology for achieving your goals?

All of these topics deserve additional time and attention in this document.  Check back and one of these days my discipline will kick in and I will lead you to actionable accountability, smart decision making and effective vision.

How's that?

So ok.... I'll share my own trials and tribulations.  I've made every mistake one can make. Might as well keep you from the same.
